Twenty-Five

Chapter Twenty-Five: Vincent

Two things were mysteriously missing from the estate along with Katya--Tia, and one of the cars.

“I knew we shouldn’t have trusted her,” I hissed. “We should have killed her. I should have fucking killed her as soon as you warned me.”

“We didn’t have enough proof,” Mario said. “You were just.”

“Mario!” I thundered, anger coursing through my veins at top speed. “She took Katya! They’re gone! If she hasn’t killed her already, she’s going to! If I had killed Tia, or if I hadn’t left Katya alone, she would be here by now! She’s going to die!”

“Don’t worry! We’re tracking Tia’s phone. We have men on the ground trying to get to them. As soon as she’s found, you’ll know.”

“Call Devrick!”

Mario slowed to a halt as we were bolting down the hallways of the estate. “Vince, you know he didn’t--”

I grabbed Mario around the collar and shoved him back against the wall. “Call him! I want him here in thirty minutes or next time I see him, I’m gonna blow his fucking head off!”

“Vince.” I turned around and Devrick was standing there with his hands in the air. “Vince, I swear--”

Before he could finish, I charged him and threw him up against the wall. “Where’s Katya?”

“I swear, I don’t know,” he replied. “Vincent, look at me. You know I would never betray you. You’re like a brother to me.”

“I also thought that was true about Tia!” On Tia’s name, I slammed Devrick against the wall, ricocheting his head backward and then forwards again. “Where is she?”

“Vince.” Mario walked up behind me and put a hand on my arm. I tried to shove him off, but he fought back, pushing me until Devrick was loose and falling to the ground and he had me pushed against a wall instead. “Calm down.”

“I could kick your ass easily.”

“You could! Which is how you should know that I wouldn’t do something this stupid unless I meant it. Look at yourself! You’ve completely lost control of your temper. You’re like your dad!” He stared into me, giving me a rare, stark serious look. “We want to help you find Katya, but you aren’t going to find her if you’re flying off the handle like this. You need to calm down.”

“She’s different,” I huffed to Mario. “She’s different.”

“I know. Let us help you find her. Let us help you save her,” he said. “You gotta breathe first though. We’re never going to get anywhere if we kill each other.”

Knowing that he was right, as much as it angered me, I started to take deep, even breaths. I tried to think of the way that my grandmother would help me manage my temper when I would explode as a kid.

“Respira, piccola. Niente nella vita vale così tanta rabbia,” I murmured out.

“Oh god,” Mario said, looking over at Devrick. “Is he going full exorcist? Should we be concerned?”

“No, I’m pretty sure it’s Italian,” Devrick replied.

“It means ‘Breathe, small one. Nothing in life is worth this much anger,’” I explained.
